Case Study: Recent EPC Contract for a major FCCU upgrade.


  • In January 2007 LME was awarded a contract to carry out a major upgrade of an overseas client's FCC unit. Central to the upgrade was the fitting of a redesigned ellipsoidal head to the Spent Catalyst Regenerator together with a complete change-out of the vessel internals. LME's initial work-scope entailed the full engineering development of the UOP Schedule 'A' design commissioned by the client and the sourcing and procurement of all new equipment and components.
  • At an early stage in the project LME elected to manufacture the new head and all other non-proprietary items 'in-house' at its quayside facility in Wales. To minimise logistical interfaces a decision was made to have all other new materials and equipment delivered to just one central holding point at the same facility where it could be checked and inspected prior to subsequent onward delivery to the job-site in one large, dedicated shipping movement.
  • The project was planned such that all site works would be finalised during a client's scheduled T & I turnaround in Q3/4, 2008. However, it was vital that a maximum volume of work should be executed prior to 'oil out' to minimise the plant down-time. To safely facilitate this work LME worked closely with its client's operations personnel to develop a number of innovative engineering solutions, such as the use of preassembly / disassembly 'cassette' structures to permit the necessary on-site pre and post shutdown works to the new and old heads.

    Shipping

  • 95% of new equipment and materials was shipped direct from LME yard in one movement co-ordinated by LME. A 'Jumbo' heavy lift vessel transported the 450 tonne head and 400 tonne of other components directly from LME works to client's quay where specialist contractors were engaged to execute the onward movement to job-site.

    Construction

  • LME executed the detailed planning and preparation for the Turnaround, preparing a Primavera Level 5 Schedule and Histogram, Method Statements, Lifting Studies, Risk Assessments etc. It co-ordinated the timely mobilisation of over 200 expatriate personnel, sub-contractors and construction equipment (including a 1200 tonne mobile crane) and project managed the event to a safe conclusion, within an acceptable schedule and budget.
