On behalf of the BG Group, a world leader in natural gas, Ledwood were invited to revamp two processing plant on a treatment plant near the eastern Tunisia city of Sfax. After weeks of planning, a team of more than 20 pipefitters, welders, riggers and supervisors travelled there with appropriate equipment, tooling and expertise.
The work was to be completed during a 24-day shutdown in hot North African conditions. It included awkward access and the welding of 186 stainless steel heater tube welds.
Arthur Jones, a Ledwood construction manager, said: “It was the first time that we’d operated in North Africa; it was a trip into the unknown but our team rose to the challenge and performed brilliantly.
“With the plant on shutdown for a short period only, we delivered on time, on budget and carried out work of the highest quality. BG were delighted.”
Before going out there Ledwood put a great deal of thought into how the contract should be approached. There was uncertainty over the quality of local engineering resources so the preparations had to be right. As a result they took the right individuals with the right tooling.
Arthur Jones said: “Importantly, we were able to establish a proactive approach to the work with our client, leading to efficient working throughout”.
